So what's wrong with my organization chart?

Organization charts are really the channel of distribution for your company's or organization's products and services, whether these are internal or external to the business or organization. The structure of your organization can be oriented on your business or not, oriented on your customers or client base or not, or be people friendly or not.

Traditional top down approaches have been shown not to work but people keep using them because they're familiar and clearly outline accountabilities and reporting relationships. The true test of any organization chart is whether or not the customer or client appears anywhere on the chart and the relative position of the customer or client and immediate customer contact points inside the business or organization.

Many organizations today are experimenting with different ways to draw their organization charts that focus more on their customers or clients and on the importance of all front line service delivery people from receptionists to stock takers to customer service representatives.
